Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) Assessment
Prolonged exposure to vibration from powered tools and equipment can cause permanent harm to employees. An assessment can help you determine if your employees are at risk, and enable you to put in place actions to combat any issues
Hand–Arm Vibration (HAV) - An Overview
Hand–arm vibration (HAV) arises from the use of powered tools and equipment that transmit vibration into the hands and arms. Prolonged and repeated exposure can lead to serious and permanent health conditions, including vibration white finger, loss of sensation, numbness, and pain. Collectively, these conditions are known as Hand–Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS).
Employer Responsibilities
Employers have a legal duty to ensure that employees are not exposed to vibration levels above the Exposure Limit Value (ELV).
- If the Exposure Action Value (EAV) is reached or exceeded, employers must take steps to reduce exposure as far as reasonably practicable.
- If the Exposure Limit Value (ELV) is exceeded, immediate action must be taken to reduce exposure below the limit.
Effective monitoring and control are essential to meeting these obligations and protecting employee health.
